Argentine ants are a common pest in Georgia. They are very small – about 3 mm long and dark colored. Their colonies have multiple queens. They like moist places and sweet food. They “farm” scales and aphids on plants, protecting them from predators, and consuming their sweet secretions. This damages the plants. You can often see their trails climbing trees, bushes, and buildings. They usually enter our homes in search of food and water.
Killing worker Argentine ants has little effect, because the queens can produce many more workers. People commonly make argentine ants worse by spraying trails that come into the house with an OTC product. This triggers a natural defense mechanism in Argentine Ants known as ‘colony budding’ that can actually make the problem worse.
Fire ants have been amazingly effective at spreading across the southeast. Another thing that they are effective at is defending their colonies. You have probably experienced the painful bites and stings they inflict if you, or someone you know, have ever disturbed one of their mounds or foraging trails.
Fire ants use a chemical communication system based on pheromones to completely cover their unsuspecting victim and then attack all at one time. This is why attacks usually involve multiple stings. Reactions to fire ant attacks range from small, red, itching bumps to severe blisters in people who are allergic to their venom. In extreme cases, their attacks can even lead to death.
Certain areas may be more prone to fire ants due to large populations in the vicinity. In cases like these, Skyline offers our year-round fire ant program, which includes quarterly inspections and any necessary treatments. It’s the surest way to guarantee that your yard stays fire ant-free!
