Winter Pests

Home / Pest Control / Winter Pests

Winter time in Georgia offers little reprieve from the normal pests that often infest homes throughout the other seasons of the year. It rarely gets cold enough here to have a noticeable impact on pest populations. We do see fewer bees and mosquitoes flying around outside. However – the warmth and protection offered by our homes tends to attract other pests to set up their home inside our living spaces.

Ants – Several species of ants commonly look indoors for protection from decreasing temperatures. Argentine ants are most commonly encountered. They are very difficult to control. They have a natural defense mechanism called ‘colony budding’ that actually makes the problem much worse when homeowners spray over-the-counter pesticides in an attempt to kill them. Location of the colony and appropriate treatment methods are critical to controlling an Argentine ant infestation.

Rats and mice – Rodent infestations spike in the winter months. Rats and mice enter attics, crawlspaces, as well as living spaces to overwinter. Homeowners sometimes hear scampering noises in walls or ceilings when rodents enter a home. Homeowners commonly find droppings in and under cabinets or drawers, in closets, and in other out-of-the-way areas. Rats and mice can get into pantries and cabinets and feed on food products. They will gnaw through paper or plastic to get at the food source. Rats and mice are highly unsanitary as they spread their feces and urine over everything they encounter.
