Social Circle, GA Pest Control Services

With its annual average of 48 inches of rainfall, Social Circle is a humid area. The summers are long and hot, and the winters are not bitterly cold but can feel very cold because of the humidity. It is a preferable city to reside in with an affordable cost of living. However, it is also preferable to pests because of the abundant moisture and warmer temperatures. These are three of the most common pests in the area.

Spiders

Spiders may live indoors or outdoors. If you see spiders in your home, it usually indicates that there is a food source. Unfortunately, that may mean another pest infestation since they feed off of insects. Some spider bites can be painful and may make a person feel ill. However, the black widow and brown recluse are two spiders to avoid. Brown recluse spiders have long legs and may be light to dark brown in color. They have a distinct violin shape on their lower abdomen. Their bite can cause necrosis and discoloration of skin tissue. Female black widows are poisonous. They are smooth, black and shiny with a red hourglass on the lower part of their abdomen. Their bites may cause a flu-like illness.

Termites

There are several varieties of termites. While some eat only dry wood, many eat damp wood. This means that they can destroy anything from wood beams on a foundation to wallpaper and trees, but the most common in our area is the Eastern subterranean termite. Subterranean termites typically live underground and burrow into homes through dirt tubes or tunnels. You can usually see these mud tubes along a home's foundation. Also, look for piles of shed wings or areas of gnawed wood. If they are eating the wood from the inside out, you may notice tube-like lines on the wood and areas that should sound solid but sound hollow instead. Termite colonies grow quickly and can cause thousands of dollars in damages within weeks.

Ants

These tiny pests enter homes through screens, under doors and even through foundation cracks. Most ants are in search of food. They are often found in cereal boxes and other food containers that lack airtight seals. Also, they may go in rooms such as bedrooms or living rooms where snack crumbs often fall. Carpenter ants are bigger and feed on wood instead. They can destroy eaves and even wood fixtures in a home. Red ants can cause painful stings. Some ants bite and can leave itchy bumps.
